NUS High 2012 Congress Visit
Dr Soo Khee Chee
While listening to the speech given by Dr Soo Khee Chee, he showed us how dangerous cancer truly is in Singapore. ⅓ of Singaporean will get some form of cancer with 10 thousands diagnosed annually. Every year about 5 thousand people die due to this disease. Therefore research in the areas of cancer is crucial to reduce the amount of death. So far, Cancer research has been based on preserving form and function without sacrificing the best possible chance of a cure. The complexity present in cancer cells proves to be hard to cure.
The best possible cure would be the usage of drugs that could specifically target cancer cells and eliminate them.

For research, it is essential to have partner and networking. This is to allow benefits on your part as knowledge and equipments can be shared. Logistical organization is another important factor to a good research. This eliminates problems from the data collection that could impact the results.
Presentations
The first presentation on the effect of stress on subsequent performance in observers during high fidelity simulation based training is a project based on social sciences. Within the project, I learnt the importances of noting the methods of gathering data and how they are important in getting the data required to prove your hypothesis. Alternating the conclusion of the project is important as a clear and concise conclusion can give a definite impact on your project. It is also important to think of other possible scenarios that would fit the result and deduce the possibility of such. Finally, I think that the presentation they gave was great in telling the objectives, but when presented with the data. Their graphical representation could definitely be better explained to allow the audience to better understand.
In the Generalized Quantum Tic-Tac-Toe project. I think that their presentation was much better. Being able to convey the information of their project to the audience was down to numeral factors. First is the dynamic visualization of the project. Usage of animation allowed the audience to fully visualize their project. It also makes the audience less bored due to the moving of pictures. Secondly, is the usage of key word to give a better focus. At the start they used the word entanglement to help convey the relationships when playing ordinary Tic-Tac-Toe. Finally, the terminology was well defined to a point that the audience is able to understand. Usually, complicated projects would have pretty complicated words. When the presenter is able to let the audience understand those terminology, then can the audience fully understand their project.
Posters
Radio Telescope
The first poster that I have chosen is actually a poster on Radio Telescope done by Hwa Chong Institution. Looking at the poster, its great that they put a background information for such a content rich project. The presentation board also showed the methods clearly. The pictures taken for the project was not really of use due to the lack in description. The project itself, i felt was not bad. It did have its complexity, but their number of testing is too little. They only tested twice to get a reading. Another thing i think should be improved is their conclusion. With different results, maybe they can think of the other possible scenario causing the results. Overall not a bad poster and with a interesting background .
The role of cumulative training stress on the immune responds during intense exercises
The second poster that i chosen is the project on the roles of cumulative training stress on the immune responds during intense exercises. For this, the first thing i noticed is the title of the project being really specific. Unlike the first poster, it stated really specifically which area of research they were doing in.
In the poster itself, it is really detailed in a lot of ways. The usage of diagrams to and construction charts play a great role in helping the reader understand their project better. Even with a lot of words, the poster doesnt look messy due to great organization. Clear labels and distinction of the various aspect of the project.
Optimization of Elevator Scheduling
This is the third poster i have chosen. It is done by NUS High students. Poster is clearly labeled and overall looks real simple. Upon reading, the lack of explanation for their testing procedure gives a big question mark on the reader. They did have diagrams to explain, but the lack of data makes it hard to compare the previous system compared to their optimized system. Alternately their conclusion was also not clear and is rather vague.
